The theory of choice that underpins reality therapy is used in this article as an interpretational tool to explain psychic crises. A case study is analysed in a qualitative way which shows how utilisation of the constructs of the theory of choice can be used in a counselling process. It presents possibilities for a client to actualise, regain and stabilise his mental health according to his biological inheritance, the influence of social environment, his concepts and perception of modernity, and consequent psychic crises. This arti-cle offers a practical application of dealing with mental health problems from the theory of ‘illness’ to the theory of ‘healing’. The author also considers the often disregarded question of ‘who the person is?’ and looks at the person’s individual and social dimensions, together with the psychology of personal freedom.
