Abstract

Misophonia is a disorder in which a person experiences strong and disproportionate emotional responses to every day sounds and visual images. We call them triggers, because they trigger strong emotional reactions in the form of anger and/or disgust and a specific physiological change. When the trigger occurs, it demands the full attention of the sufferer. The degree of misophonia varies from a small annoyance to complete exhaustion. In most cases the trigger sound is associated with the eating, chewing or breathing of another person. The stimulus is perceived by the brain as danger. Due to the interaction of cognitive, physiological, emotional and neurological components, misophonia is a very complex disorder.
