In Slovenia, the process of deinstitutionalization for persons with physical disability is still in its infancy. It is however important for establishing and maintaining the control system of the individual. On the basis of the theoretical concepts of the Glasser’s Choice theory, one of more signi cant programmes of deinstitutionalization is personal assi-stance, because it represents efforts at giving persons with physical disability control over their quality of life and enables them to select more successful methods of control over their own behaviour. In this article we emphasize the importance of integrating the concepts of Choice theory, particularly in institutional life. Choice theory de nes an institution as an external variable, and an individual as an internal control system which manipulates external variables in order to achieve and satisfy their own needs. Physical disability is not only a disability, but also a disturbance of opportunities for the realization of inner objectives. In this article, we present a summary of the research paper entitled »Ef ciency of Psychological Need Satisfaction in Persons with Physical Disabilities« where we attempted to establish, based on our ndings, how people with physical disability satisfy their psychological needs and whether personal assistance is the key for the satisfaction of their psychological needs.
