Abstract

The study examined the incidence of stress among selected sample of Slovenian students with detailed analysis of behavior and thinking that they use when dealing with the stressful situation. Proceeding from the cognitive behavioral theory, we examined the occurrence of cognitive distortions and behavior, and their interdependence. Results showed that selected students suffer a high degree of stress, most often caused by problems at school or at work. The most common cognitive distortion that occurs is the formulation of »should statements«. An analysis of the coincidence of mental distortions and behavior has shown three typical patterns: emotional relief, cognitive problems and weakened social support. Each of these patterns includes typical behaviors and ways of thinking. Students expressed the need for relaxation, use of professional help and conversation, which would enable them to deal with stress more effectively.
