Abstract

There are lively discussions in professional circles around the world regarding the definition of hypnosis. In the past hypnosis had a poor reputation as a controversial therapeutic method, but nowadays there is an increasing weight of empirically validated evidence that hypnosis can be effective in helping various physical and mental disorders.  This article presents an overview of the results of two world renowned organisations. Further, 12 meta-studies are discussed that are the results of empirical research findings. The article also presents a short history of therapeutic hypnosis, and the history, developments and medical perspective of hypnosis, hypnotherapy and hypnopsychotherapy in Slovenia.
